WordPress SEO Services and Consulting: What They Actually Cover
WordPress SEO is mostly a configuration problem, not a content problem. The platform is capable out of the box; what holds most WordPress sites back is an accumulation of plugins, theme defaults and settings nobody revisited. Fixing those is usually faster and cheaper than any content programme — and until they are fixed, content work underperforms.
This is what a WordPress-specific SEO engagement actually covers, and what you should expect a consultant to look at first.
What makes WordPress different
Generic SEO advice applies, but WordPress adds its own failure modes:
- Plugin sprawl. Every active plugin can add CSS, JavaScript and database queries to every page — including pages that never use it. Sites with thirty or forty active plugins are common, and few of them were ever audited.
- Theme and page-builder markup. Builders like WPBakery and Elementor generate heavy markup and frequently produce broken heading structures — decorative elements marked as headings, pages with no H1 at all.
- Automatic archives. WordPress creates author, date, tag and custom-post-type archives whether or not you want them. Left unmanaged, they generate thin, near-duplicate pages that dilute crawl budget.
- Attachment pages. Every uploaded image can get its own indexable URL with no content on it.
- WooCommerce complexity. Faceted navigation, cart and checkout URLs, product variations and out-of-stock pages all need deliberate handling.
What a WordPress SEO audit should cover
Indexing and crawl control
Which post types and taxonomies are in your sitemap, and should they be? Most sites are publishing archives and utility pages they would never want a visitor to land on. Invoices, newsletter pages and builder templates appearing in a sitemap is more common than you would expect.
Heading structure across templates
Because WordPress is template-driven, one broken heading pattern repeats across hundreds of pages — and one fix corrects them all. This is usually the highest-value hour in a WordPress audit.
Performance, measured correctly
Caching plugins bypass optimisation for logged-in users. Testing your site while signed in to the dashboard shows the slow, unoptimised version and leads to the wrong conclusion entirely. Always measure in an incognito window or with an external tool.
Where a caching plugin is already installed, the question is usually whether its optimisation features are switched on, not whether to add another plugin.
Duplicate and competing content
Blogs that have run for years accumulate posts covering the same topic from slightly different angles. Those posts compete with each other, splitting signals that should be consolidated.
Structured data
SEO plugins generate Organization and WebPage markup automatically. Service, FAQ and Product markup usually needs adding deliberately, and it must match what the page visibly says.
What consulting adds over a package
A retainer does the work. Consulting decides what the work should be. That distinction matters most when:
- You have an in-house team who can execute but need direction
- You are planning a migration or replatform and want to avoid losing rankings
- Traffic has dropped and nobody is sure why
- You have been paying for SEO for a year and cannot tell what it bought
If you need the work done rather than diagnosed, a package is the better value. If you do not yet know what the work is, start with the diagnosis.
Common questions
Is WordPress good for SEO?
Yes. It is well structured, extensible and has mature SEO plugins. Problems come from how individual sites are configured, not from the platform.
Which SEO plugin should I use?
Yoast and Rank Math both do the job. Running one properly configured matters far more than which one. Never run two at once — they conflict.
Do I need to change theme?
Usually not. Most theme-related problems are configuration, and a theme change is disruptive. Change the theme when its structure is genuinely the constraint, not because a lighter one exists.
How many plugins is too many?
There is no magic number — a well-built plugin costs less than a badly built one. The question worth asking is whether any are duplicating each other. Three email systems or three form plugins running side by side is a real cost in licences, data fragmentation and security surface, even where performance is covered by caching.
Where to start
Indexing control, heading structure and a correctly measured performance baseline. Those three cover most of what is wrong with most WordPress sites, and none of them require new content.
